Bin tag use to end
Use of the coloured tags you attach to rubbish bins is ending across Auckland, to be replaced by an annual charge in your rates.
Changes to collection service
We are changing our 'Pay as you throw' bin tag service and moving to a regionwide rates-funded, weekly kerbside rubbish collection service.
Why this is happening
After consulting on the
Annual Budget for 2022/2023, we decided to introduce a rates-funded system for our kerbside rubbish collection services.
We are standardising waste services in Auckland so that every property receives the same:
- level of service
- types of bins
- payment options.

When the transition will happen
Waitākere
Waitākere will be the first area to stop using tags in December 2024.
North Shore
North Shore will follow in March 2025.
Papakura
Papakura will stop using tags from May 2025.
What you need to do
- Plan ahead and use up your tags before they are no longer used in your area.
- Avoid buying more tags than you need.
