You need a building consent to check that your solar water heating system meets various clauses of the Building Code, including:

You may not need a building consent for certain work, like repair, maintenance, re-positioning or replacing of water heaters, as it might be exempt from a building consent.
A certifying plumber and/or gasfitter licensed under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, Drainlayers Act 2006, should carry out any hot water installations.
As most systems require an electrical supply, we recommend you should engage a registered electrician.
