About the path
A short walk to a scenic lookout point in Āwhitu Regional Park, on the southwest shores of the Manukau Harbour.
Start on Hatton Road by the park sign and information board. Follow the blue markers along the gravel and grass track from Hatton Road up to the lookout point.
Take in the amazing views from the lookout over the Manukau Harbour, to the Coromandel Peninsula and back to Auckland city.
From the lookout point, choose to retrace your steps back to the start, or alternatively continue walking on other tracks to explore more of the regional park. Good options include the Settlers Track towards idyllic Kauritūtahi Bay, or confident walkers can take the Kauri Walk through native bush and back to the starting point.
Make a day of your visit to Āwhitu by combining your walk with a swim, picnic and visit to the historic Brook Homestead. Kauritūtahi Bay is a lovely beach to swim at high tide, or walk to neighbouring Brook Beach.
The nearby wetland, along with salt marsh, beach and intertidal areas, create unique and valuable bird habitats at Āwhitu. The wetlands are home to a small number of fernbirds (mātātā), plus paradise shelduck (pūtangitangi), mallard, bittern, Californian quail, kererū, pūkeko and tūī.
Dogs are not permitted on this walk but are allowed on-leash in the esplanade reserve area at the end of Brook Road.
