About the path
The Waterview Heritage Path combines great coastal views, playgrounds, local heritage and close-up glimpses of the towering new motorway infrastructure.
This path has a mix of concrete and gravel surfaces. It's steep in some areas and there are some steps to climb.
Start your adventure at Waterview Reserve - parking is available on Waterbank Crescent. Children love the action-packed playground, BMX track and water play area. There is also a skatepark, volleyball and basketball courts.
Head down the footpath on Daventry Street, then turn left onto Saxon Street. Kuaka Park has a second children's playground and public toilets.
Continue walking down Oakley Avenue, then turn right onto Howlett Street. An access way takes you to the gravel Howlett Esplanade path.
Follow the path along Te Auaunga (Oakley Creek) and the mangroves. There are fantastic coastal views over the creek and the Motu-Manawa-Pollen Island Marine Reserve, which protects 500ha of the inner Waitematā Harbour.
At the end of the path, turn left and follow the path around the Waterview heritage area.
The archaeological area provides a unique insight into the area's local history, which included an early flour mill, tannery and quarry.
You can see a large Cornish boiler that was used to power a Vickers steam engine for the Garrett Brother's 19th-century tannery. The boiler sits on a concrete plinth on the southern end of the heritage bridge.
