Tomohanga waka ki runga o Tūpuna Maunga

Vehicle access on Tūpuna Maunga

To Mana Whenua, the tihi (top) of a maunga holds great spiritual and cultural significance and has always been a place to be treated with respect and reverence. Honouring these values alongside creating an enhanced experience for pedestrians is at the heart of the vehicle access changes.

COVID-19 Alert Level 2 – Vehicle access on Tūpuna Maunga

Vehicle access on the Maunga return to normal under Alert Level 2.
  • All vehicle entrance gates are open.
  • Individual vehicle access codes for maunga gates will operate as normal.
  • Practice physical distancing and use the COVID Tracer app to manually record your visit.

If you have any questions about these changes, you can email: MaungaAuthority@aklc.govt.nz

Visit covid19.govt.nz for the latest public health and alert level status information.

Pedestrian-only areas

The tihi of six Tūpuna Maunga were transformed into pedestrian-only areas between 2016-2019.

The six maunga are:

  • Maungawhau / Mt Eden
  • Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill
  • Maungarei / Mt Wellington
  • Ōwairaka / Te Ahi-kā-a-Rakataura / Mt Albert
  • Pukewīwī / Puketāpapa / Mt Roskill
  • Takarunga / Mt Victoria.

The Tūpuna Maunga Authority decided to implement further vehicle access changes at Hui 22 on 21 November 2016.

See hui report and minutes on the Tūpuna Maunga Authority website.

Public safety concerns

Public safety is a priority for the Tūpuna Maunga Authority.

Each of the six Tūpuna Maunga has a single lane road to and around the tihi that is shared by cars and pedestrians. Some tihi roads have no adjoining footpath.

During traffic and pedestrian counts undertaken mid 2016, contractors witnessed regular near-misses between cars and people walking, and vehicles exceeding the speed limit on most of the maunga.

This matches the experience of management and verbal reports from visitors on the maunga.

Access for people with limited mobility

We are taking steps to ensure people with limited mobility have continued access to these maunga.

If you have limited mobility and cannot walk to the tihi, or if you are the driver of someone with limited mobility, you can request to drive to the tihi in your car.

You can open an automated gate at the entrance to each summit road by keying in an access code.
