Narrator: How do you become a candidate? To become a candidate for local elections is simple, you just have to be over 18, a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and on the electoral roll.

To stand as a candidate:
- decide on the role you’d like
- find two friends enrolled in the area you’re standing in to nominate you
- pay a $200 deposit
- fill out the nomination paper and return it before the closing date.
The next stage is campaigning - you can use social media, advertise in newspapers or on billboards, hold meetings with your community to spread the word about your candidacy and attend Meet the Candidates events.
