Ngā Kaiārahi Tū Taiao Rangatahi (REAL)

Rangatahi Environmental Action Leaders (REAL)

About the REAL programme

REAL is a programme in Auckland that helps young people become leaders in sustainability. It teaches them skills to:

  • make a difference in their communities
  • lead in the future
  • inspire others to join in.

REAL is supported by the Manukau Harbour Forum. It aims to connect teenagers interested in the environment with like-minded people and groups.

Selected students will develop understanding and skills around:

  • mātauranga Māori
  • leadership
  • caring for te taiao (nature)
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The programme accepts around 50 students a year. It is designed to:

  • encourage students to take action on causes meaningful to them by developing their skills and knowledge
  • support students to create action plans for sustainable change in their schools and communities.

REAL is based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It partners with the corporate sector to develop career pathways for participants with organisations that are committed to the sustainability journey.
