Freshwater Management Units
The National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (NPSFM) requires us to have Freshwater Management Units (FMUs). These are specific focus areas to help us manage how we look after our fresh water.
About Freshwater Management Units
In Auckland, we have three FMUs. These are:
- Kaipara FMU
- Hauraki Gulf FMU
- Manukau Harbour FMU.
Each of these FMUs:
- share at least one boundary with either Northland Regional Council or Waikato District Council
- have surface and groundwater systems that drain into one of Auckland’s three main coastal waterbodies.
Each FMUs is unique and contain many different types of freshwater environments. Some of these have issues that need their own targeted approach.
