8. Renew your alcohol club licence

You should know

Holidays can cause confusion at the end of the year. You may need to apply to renew your alcohol licence earlier than usual.

Apply to renew your alcohol licence at least 20 working days before it expires. However, under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012, the days between 20 December 2024 and 15 January 2025 are not working days.

If your licence expires between 20 December 2024 and 15 January 2025, apply for renewal by Thursday 21 November 2024.

If your licence expires between 16 January 2025 and 13 February 2025, calculate the latest date you can file your licence renewal application. This date will be in either November or December.

When to renew your alcohol club licence

If you have an existing club licence, you must apply to renew it at least 20 working days before it expires.

If you know you will be submitting your application less than 20 working days before your current licence expires, you need to say on your application form why it is late. The application form will ask you to provide further detail.

You should know

Under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act, the days between 20 December 2022 and 15 January 2023 are not working days.
 
This means if your licence is due to expire between 18 December 2022 and 16 January 2023, you will need to apply for your renewal by Monday 21 November 2022.

What you need to renew your alcohol club licence

Apply online or download the application form below. Please include:

  • A copy of the food and drinks menu.
  • A copy of the club's constitution or rules.
  • A copy of your host responsibility policy and an alcohol management plan - see Write a host responsibility policy.
  • A letter of authorisation for the consultant, if you use a consultant. A photo of the main entrance.
  • A copy of the floor plans highlighting restricted or supervised areas and the main entrance.
  • A copy of the Certificate of Incorporation or other documentary evidence of its incorporation identifying particulars of the club's charter.
  • A copy of your existing club licence.

Apply to renew your alcohol club licence

Your application fee is non-refundable.

Bring your completed application form and supporting documents to one of our libraries with council services and pay by:

  • EFTPOS
  • Visa, MasterCard or American Express.

What happens next

If you apply to renew your licence at least 20 working days before it expires, you can continue selling alcohol with no gap in business.

We will forward your application to the District Licensing Committee who will make the final decision.

Publish a public notice

Place your public notice as soon as possible.

The public have 25 working days from the date of the online notice to object to your application.

During this time, the police and the Medical Officer of Health will also look into your application.

If your application is approved

If your application is approved, we will post your renewed licence to you.

If your application is contested

We will let you know if:

  • members of the public object to your application
  • New Zealand Police, National Public Health Service - Northern Region (formerly known as Auckland Regional Public Health Service) or our inspector oppose your application.

The District Licensing Committee will contact you if you need to attend a public hearing before a final decision is made.
