Escape the city and enjoy a mountain bike ride through Sanders Reserve.
This route is suitable for confident riders with a bike that can handle some bumpy terrain. There may be some wet or slightly middy areas.
Start your ride by the main car park and follow the orange markers for the Recreation Path. The gravel path winds around the landscape with great views of the upper Waitematā Harbour.
The path crosses the bridle trail at a few points - look out for horses and riders.
Sanders Reserve has mature and regenerating coastal forest and native bird habitat on the water's edge. The park's farming history can be seen in the grassy former pasture areas and exotic trees planted by the Sanders family.
Sanders Reserve includes a more than 22km of mountain and bridle paths, so be sure to follow the path markers or the online map to stay on the right route. As you master this route, you can move onto one of the more challenging routes in Sanders Reserve. There are eight tracks to explore, with varying distances and ability levels.
