About the path
A fantastic stroll in lively Ōrewa. This walk has it all - stunning views, golden sands, playgrounds, as well as popular local cafes, fish n' chip shops and ice cream stops.
The walkway is paved most of the way, with a stretch of grass or beach walking at the northern end.
Start at the Ōrewa River estuary on Hibiscus Coast Highway. There are only a handful of car parking spaces here, so you may need to park on the other side of the road by the Estuary Arts Centre (a great place to take in some culture or grab a coffee for your walk).
Follow the wide shared path along the river and past the campground.
Pack your towel and combine your walk with a dip in the water at beautiful Ōrewa Beach, or find a sunny spot to watch the surfers, kite surfers and paddle boarders out on the ocean.
Just before the surf lifesaving club, you'll find a small children's playground and the Lions’ Free Outdoor Gym. There are eight beachfront exercise stations including a leg press, cycle strider and bench press. If you're feeling sporty, use the beachfront volleyball net and basketball court (after the car park).
At the Ōrewa Surf Lifesaving Club, walk through the car park or take the beachfront route instead.
From here the narrow sandy path leads to another large kids playground featuring spinning tops, tunnel slides, swings and a playhouse for toddlers. A shade sail provides protection over the baby swings.
The path emerges onto Hibiscus Coast Highway opposite Riverside Road. Follow the wide footpath through Ōrewa town centre for about five minutes, past the local cafes and restaurants until you reach Moana Reserve.
The path through Moana Reserve continues north along the stunning coastline and becomes an unpaved grass track from Marine View. This may be muddy when wet. At low tide, you can choose to walk on the beach as a scenic alternative.
Finish at Arundel Reserve, or keep exploring the northern tip of the beach.
There are plenty of picnic tables, gas barbecues and public toilets located along the route.
