About the path
A short, flat walk to the picturesque mouth of the Puhoi River in Wenderholm, Auckland's first regional park. This peaceful stroll is a great way to explore Wenderholm and venture a bit further away from the crowds.
The walk is not signposted and there is no formed track to follow. From the main car park, walk to the beach, head north and enjoy the scenery.
Stroll down the long sandy beach (walking over some low rocks in places) and enjoy the great coastal views. If the sun is out, you might want to take a dip in the water - just stay clear of the strong tidal currents at the mouth of the Puhoi River.
Alternatively, you can walk on the grass under the shade of the trees and listen out for native birdlife.
Te Akeake is the area at the end of the sandspit headland. People have camped, fished and swum here for hundreds of years. Take in views of the forested coastal headlands of Mahurangi Regional Park, which is directly across the Puhoi Estuary.
Walk back down and follow the signs to historic Couldrey House and Gardens. Soak up the atmosphere of yesteryear within the beautiful garden setting and fully furnished historic homestead.
Recharge after your walk by picnicking under the historic pōhutukawa trees. Electric and wood-fired barbeques are provided (bring your own charcoal or wood), and some have great views of the Puhoi River.
Kids will love spotting pūkeko, ducks and farm animals in the park. After your walk, wander down Schischka Road (the main road entrance leading to the car park) to spot sheep and young cows. You're free to wander through the paddocks containing farm animals - please follow any safety signs and leave gates as you find them.
Public toilets, changing rooms and drinking water are available at the main car park.
Wenderholm is a 35 minute drive north of central Auckland. You can also reach the regional park by public transport. Take the bus to Waiwera, and walk ten minutes (over the Waiwera River bridge) to reach the park entrance.
