This hidden gem is the perfect place for a lazy picnic by the stream on a hot summer’s day. With huge native trees, flat grassy areas, a BBQ, a lazy stream and easy access, it has it all.
Park next to the big park sign by the Okiwi primary school and head up the concrete walkway that doubles as a cycling trail for young riders.
After the ‘speed bumps’ turn left into a lush, green haven, the old part of Okiwi Park, but sometimes an unforgiving Okiwi landscape.
Here you find huge old tōtara and pūriri trees, spared by the farmer who used to operate in the area, and lush new forest, looked after by the unofficial kaitiaki (caretakers) of the park, the tamariki (children) of Te Kura o Okiwi (Okiwi School).
Thanks to the efforts of students and volunteers there are few pest animals here, and plenty of native birds.
Wander right around the area and discover the hidden messages, or just sit and watch the stream meandering through the forest. The boardwalks in the park are a reminder that this stream, which is part of a huge water catchment, sometimes floods, so take care when it is raining heavily. The park has nice open grassy areas and a BBQ as well. Once you’re done, return via the Mabey Road entrance by the toilet and wander back past the school.
