About the path

A peaceful walking trail alongside the Opanuku Stream in Henderson.

Start at Opanuku Reserve on Henderson Valley Road, where you'll find car parking and a small children's playground. You can also access the walkway from a number of local streets, or leave the car at home and take the train to Henderson Station (located just a few minutes' walk from the path start).

Stroll through Opanuku Reserve to Henderson Park, following the path around the park and sport fields. There's plenty of room to kick a ball in the park - or try your hand at frisbee golf, a unique sport played in the park. Pick up a frisbee and follow the sign-posted instructions around the park.

There's a great dog exercise area in the south of Henderson Park - but please keep your dogs off the sports fields.

Continue on the trail towards Opanuku Stream along the gravel path, boardwalk and over several bridges. The walkway follows the stream and weaves through lush native bush. Look out for fantail, tūī and kingfishers.

The route ends in Shona Esplanade Reserve, at Palomino Drive. Turn around and re-trace your steps back to the starting point.

If you have time on your return, pop into the Corban Estate Arts Centre (adjacent to Henderson Park) to take in some culture. Corban Estate uses the historic winery buildings and is home to galleries which feature a changing programme of exhibitions, a cafe, gallery shop and artists' studios.
