About the path
This walk takes in one of the most popular viewing spots on Waiheke, and some great coastal trails. You’ll enjoy views out over the Hauraki Gulf and walk some lesser-known trails near popular Palm Beach. The route is two loops, so you can choose to do only half if you run out of time or energy. There are some steep climbs, but the views are worth the effort. Sections can be a bit wet and muddy in winter.
Start at Palm Beach Hall, next to the Red Shed art gallery, head up Miro Road. Where the road reaches a dead end, a lovely shady bush walkway continues up to Cory Road. Turn right into Cory Road and continue to the lookout over Palm Beach.
From here there is a walkway down a track to little Palm Beach (also known as Nudey Bay). Yes, people sunbathe in the nude here, but don’t worry, everyone gets along. At the bottom of the walkway turn right to go along the beach, and make your way around the rocks to the main part of Palm Beach. At high tide there is a track up and over the rocky outcrop, just follow the locals. There’s a great children’s playground in a reserve in the middle of Palm Beach with toilets. There are also barbecues at the main beach.
If you are keen on some more walking, continue to the far (eastern) end of Palm Beach. There are steps here by the big palm trees up to Matapana Road. At the end of your climb, turn left to go around in a loop on quiet Matakana Road, past beautiful homes, great views and back down to Hill Road – turn right and go down back to the café, shop and beach. Return along the beach to your start at the hall.
Moderate walking, paths and roadside, some steep sections.
