About the path
Duder Regional Park in south-east Auckland is known for its tranquillity and spectacular views. In this scenic walk to Waipokaia/Duck Bay, you'll get off the beaten track and explore a lesser-known part of Duder.
From the main car park, follow the red markers for the Farm Loop Walk. Walk past the wetland bird breeding area (no public access is allowed). Small numbers of the endangered tūturiwhatu (the New Zealand dotterel) breed on the shell banks – there are only about 1500 of these birds in the world.
From the Farm Loop track, look out for the signs towards Waipokaia Bay.
You'll walk through a short section of original native forest. Resident native birds include silvereye (tauhou), New Zealand pigeon (kererū), morepork (ruru), tūī, fantail (pīwakawaka), grey warbler (riroriro) and kingfisher (kōtare).
Enjoy idyllic views and see the trees and plants that Māori used for eating, weaving, dyeing and building.
Continue walking along the coast to Waipokaia/Duck Bay, where you can watch the birdlife or continue past the Te Wharau Campground to Mangeo Valley Track which will take you past regenerating wetland, up to the ridge where you can connect to the wider track network or return to the car park via the Farm Loop.
Stroll along the pōhutukawa-fringed beach and enjoy the great views out to Pakihi Island and Waitawa Regional Park.
Dogs are not allowed in Duder Regional Park.
