About the path
A visit to Waiheke is not complete without a trip to the far end of the island.
Historic Stony Batter has some big surprises in store:
- Intriguing rock formations
- Groves of old taraire trees
- Stunning views in all directions and
- One of the largest WWII tunnel and gun emplacement complexes in the Auckland region.
The path follows well kept gravel roads and grass trails, which can get a little wet in winter. This path crosses private property, so you need to respect the rules. Dogs are not allowed in this area.
To get to the start of the path, drive out on Man O'War Bay Road and near the top of the hill turn left onto Stonybatter Road. After a while you will reach a gate with a toilet and a car park. From here you can walk to Stony Batter.
Follow the gravel road all the way past the rocky outcrops and the taraire forest until you reach the first remains of the army base that was set up here during World War II.
There are tunnels, gun emplacements and remains of utility buildings and camps all around this area. The best spots are the large gun emplacements above the tunnels (marked on the online map). Visit the Stony Batter Tunnels website to find out how to take a tour through the tunnels.
