About the path
The Opanuku Stream shared path is one of the award-winning Twin Streams walk and cycleways developed by the former Waitakere City Council. The path includes environmental, conservation and community initiatives aimed at protecting the area against floodwater from the Waitakere Ranges.
The shared path stretches from Great North Road, through Palm Heights to Henderson Valley Road. It follows the stream and weaves through lush native bush. This is a very sheltered area, perfect for walkers or joggers even on cool or windy days.
The route is sealed, but sometimes narrow with some short steep sections. It's not suitable for sports cycling training.
The Corban Estate Arts Centre is a good starting point. There is ample parking here and on Henderson Valley Road, and it's close to Henderson Train Station. If you have time, pop into the Arts Centre for a visit before or after your trip. It is home to galleries which feature a changing programme of exhibitions, a cafe, gallery shop and artist's studios.
Opanuku highlights include the kōwhai in flower (around October) and the fantail, tūī and kingfishers.
Pack a picnic - there is a picnic area at the Border Road entry/exit, and you're spoiled for choice with peaceful spots to stop along the way.
Towards the end of the route you'll pass Henderson Valley Park, which has public toilets and a great kids playground with a climbing web.
