Cape Horn Lookout loop: Waikōwhai Walkway

Description of the walk

Wander along to Cape Horn Lookout, where you will be able to track the progress of ships as they make their way up the Manukau Harbour.

The track begins in Waikōwhai Park, where you can have a picnic and let the kids play on the playground. From there, you can climb the 267 steps to the lookout, or take the route around the shoreline at low tide.

Along the way you can enjoy stunning views of the harbour and the native forest with its associated birdlife.

Distance

2km

How to access Cape Horn Lookout

Access points are Cape Horn Road and Waikōwhai Road. There is a map of the loop on the Waikōwhai Walkway page.

Suitability

Not suitable for mountain bikes, baby buggies or wheelchairs.

Dog access

On-leash along the loop, and there is an off-leash area in Waikōwhai Park.

Keep safe on this walk

For your safety:

  • walk along the foreshore only two hours before or after the daily low tides
  • wear good walking shoes
  • protect yourself from sun and rain
  • take plenty of drinking water.

Avoid being caught out by the Manukau Harbour tides. Plan your low tide sections so you can make it back to dry land in good time.

If you or someone else is in trouble on the water, call the Coastguard on 09 303 1303, or *500 from your mobile. The nearest coastguard station is at French Bay, and is contactable 24/7.
