Removal of decaying pine trees at Churchill Park

What we are doing

We are removing the decaying pine trees at Churchill Park in Glendowie to create a strong and biodiverse ecosystem.

We are planting new trees including:

  • mānuka
  • kānuka
  • māhoe
  • tī kōuka.

What we aim to do

This project aims to:

  • improve the environment
  • increase resilience to climate change.

It will also:

  • preserve the park's 'countryside in the city' atmosphere
  • significantly improve local facilities.

Why we are doing this

Many pine trees are in an advanced state of decay. Each year around 10 to 20 trees die or fall.

This creates an increasing risk to public safety, particularly to:

  • nearby properties
  • community members who use the park.

How we plan to do this

We will replace unsafe and old pine trees with a variety of native and exotic trees and shrubs. This will provide shade for the public, livestock and local bird populations.

Then we will focus on removing pine trees in Stand 1, 2A and 2B as shown in the map.

Next steps include:

  • extensive planting
  • managing weed species and pest animals
  • installing stock-exclusion fencing.

Resource consent and decision to proceed with works

A resource consent to remove the stand of pine trees was granted in February 2023.

In June 2024, Ōrākei Local Board approved the removal of decaying pine trees at Churchill Park.

This project aligns with the:

These plans will guide the future development of green spaces in the area.

What happens next

Pine tree removal starts in July 2024.

We will plant native and exotic vegetation as outlined in the approved 'Ecological Management Plan for Proposed Pine Removals at Churchill Park'.
