About the Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority

The Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority was established to co-govern 14 Tūpuna Maunga following a 2014 Treaty of Waitangi settlement.

What is the Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority?

The Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority (Maunga Authority) is the statutory authority established under the Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau Collective Redress Act to co-govern the Tūpuna Maunga.

The Maunga Authority is comprised of equal representatives from Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau and Auckland Council, together with Crown (non-voting) representation.

A new term of the Authority will begin once appointments are made by Ngā Mana Whenua and the Auckland Council, following the local elections on 8 October 2022. The membership of the new board will be advised early in 2023.

Proposed amendment to the Tūpuna Maunga integrated management plan

The Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Authority have made an amendment to the Tūpuna Maunga o Tāmaki Makaurau Integrated Management Plan under the Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau Collective Redress Act 2014 and Reserves Act 1977.

This is a new appendix to the Integrated Management Plan (IMP). It proposes ecological restoration projects (including the planting of native species and the removal of non-native trees) for:

  • Ōwairaka / Te Ahi Kā a Rakataura / Mt Albert (the Ōwairaka project)
  • Pukewīwī / Puketāpapa / Mt Roskill
  • Ōtāhuhu / Mt Richmond
  • Te Tātua a Riukiuta / Big King

The Tūpuna Maunga Authority holds regular hui.

The Tūpuna Maunga Authority has scheduled the following hui in 2024:

  • 10 June
  • 29 July
  • 9 September
  • 21 October
  • 25 November.

The venues and hui start times are determined closer to the hui date and are publicly notified in the New Zealand Herald one week prior.
