Our Sustainable Procurement Framework and objectives

Sustainable Procurement Framework

Our Sustainable Procurement Framework aspires to create positive impact for our suppliers, contractors, and the communities we serve.

We aim to use our everyday spending power to promote the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of Auckland.

The framework emphasises our commitment to sustainable procurement and was endorsed by the Governing Body and the Council Controlled Organisations in 2018.

Sustainable procurement objectives

Our sustainable procurement objectives document from March 2020 sets clear targets for our organisation to commit and deliver.

We continue to be at the forefront of leading sustainable procurement change in New Zealand.

Our objectives document focuses on five key areas:

  • increasing our direct and indirect spend with Māori and Pasifika owned businesses and social enterprise businesses
  • creating quality employment and development opportunities for targeted communities
  • increasing the participation of local suppliers to deliver products and services within their local board area
  • working with our supply chain to minimise waste to landfill and developing zero waste thinking in all our activity
  • working with our supply chain to reduce carbon emissions in project and service delivery to reduce the effects of climate change.

Help from local business

Our suppliers and contractors also have a role to play in achieving these sustainable procurement objectives.

Implementing a sustainable procurement strategy in a business can help attract new opportunities, broaden the available talent base and widen contract possibilities.

Businesses can:

  • promote supplier diversity when engaging with subcontractors
  • find opportunities to hire and train people from target communities
  • promote waste reduction in your operations and purchasing decisions, by reducing, reusing, and recycling
  • promote emission reduction strategies in your operations.
