Extension of time to commence building work
From the date your building consent was issued, you have 12 months to start work unless we have already agreed to a specified extended period of time.
Changes effective from 1 December 2022
In recent years, we have seen an increase in the number of time extension requests.
Due to this demand, we now automatically grant an extension of time for all building consents issued from 1 December 2022.
When to apply for a time extension
Your consent may lapse if you cannot start building work within 12 months (or any specified extended period we have already granted to you).
To avoid your consent lapsing, you need to apply for an extension of time before the specified time frame is reached.
Work not started
If you have not started work or we have not made any inspections within 12 months of issuing your consent (or any specified extended period already granted to you), we will send you a letter asking if you intend to proceed.
If you want to proceed but need more time, apply for an extension of time.
You should know
If you do not apply for an extension of time before your consent lapses, you will need to apply for a new building consent to complete your project.
Code Compliance Certificate
Two years after your building consent is granted we must decide whether to approve or refuse your CCC.
In nearly all cases, you do not need to apply for an extension of time. You can continue to complete your construction as normal.
For more information, check your email for your
23-month reminder letter.
