I mua i tāu taurima kurī

Before you adopt a dog

We will always try to find the best possible home for animals. We will consider the best interests of both you and the animal before we approve an adoption.

A guide for first time dog owners

All first time dog owners should read our guide for dog owners, particularly the following pages:

We will check your property

One of our animal management officers will visit you at home to check if your property is suitable for keeping a dog.

We will check whether your property is:

  • fully fenced
  • of adequate size for the dog you are adopting.

Our tip

If you live in rental accommodation you must get a letter from the property owner, giving their approval to have the dog on the property.

Pre-adoption checks for dogs

All dogs up we put up for adoption have been:

  • health checked
  • neutered
  • registered
  • micro-chipped.

All dogs are given a basic vaccination before they leave the shelter. Most dogs will need a booster shot for any further vaccinations.

Speak to your vet for more information.
