Implementing the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management (NPSFM) in Auckland

The NPSFM is a central government policy that gives local authorities direction on how to manage fresh water in New Zealand. The policy relates to:

  • water quality
  • water quantity
  • ecosystems.

It applies to rivers, lakes, streams, wetlands, aquifers, and coastal and marine receiving environments.

Visit National policy statement for freshwater management to read the policy on the Ministry for the Environment's website. The government is reviewing the NPSFM and some of the information on our website may change.
