Why did the council set up Haumaru Housing?
In 2015 we wanted to look at ways of improving the delivery of social housing for older residents.
Through the Long-term Plan and a special consultation process, the council decided to set up a partnership with a specialist provider. We have transferred the management of our 1412 units to a joint venture company that would improve and develop the portfolio.
This approach aims to:
- improve the quality of units
- assess whether villages are in the right locations to meet residents' needs and look at development opportunities
- enable access to government subsidies, for those that qualify, that couldn't be accessed by councils.
