Final proposal for representation arrangements for the 2025 elections

Public notice date: 03 October 2024

Closing date and time: 03 November 2024, 4 p.m.

Auckland Council has finalised a proposal for representation arrangements (PDF) for the 2025 local body elections.

Following consultation on the council’s initial proposal, the council’s Joint Governance Working Party considered 2,359 submissions from the public and 19 submissions from local boards. Auckland Council’s Governing Body resolved the final proposal after receiving the working party’s recommendations for amending the initial proposal based on submissions: read the Report and recommendations to the Governing Body on submissions to the council’s initial proposal for representation arrangements (PDF).

The council will now have a one-month period, when objections and appeals can be made, in keeping with the Local Electoral Act 2001.

In early November, appeals and objections that have been received will be referred to the Local Government Commission (LGC) to make an independent decision. The Local Government Commission may choose to hold a hearing. The process for a hearing can be found in the Local Government Commission Guidelines, Appendix J. Aucklanders can expect to hear an outcome on the council’s proposal by April 2025, allowing time for changes to be introduced before next year’s council elections.

Timeline

  • Appeals and objections can be lodged from 9am on 3 October 2024.
  • The closing date is 4pm on 3 November 2024.

Appeals and objections may be lodged

Any person who made a submission on the council’s initial proposal may lodge an appeal against the council’s decision on its final proposal. An appeal must relate to the matters raised in that person's submission. Any person may lodge an objection to the council’s final proposal. An objection must identify the matters to which the objection relates.

The council is required to forward appeals and objections to the Local Government Commission to decide. Appeals and objections must be made in writing and must be received by council no later than 4pm on 3 November 2024, .
