Prohibited and restricted freedom camping areas

Find prohibited and restricted freedom camping areas

Use the property search box to find out which local board you plan to visit.

Once you find which local board you plan to visit, select it from the list of local boards.

You can then check for areas where freedom camping is prohibited (not allowed) or restricted (allowed with extra rules) under the Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw.

Steps to find prohibited and restricted freedom camping areas

  1. Use the property search box to find an address near to the area where you want to freedom camp.
  2. Select the local board you want to visit from the list of local boards.

Local boards

Māngere-Ōtāhuhu local board is not listed because it does not have any prohibited or restricted freedom camping areas under this bylaw. If you want to freedom camp in this area, follow the general rules and do not camp at any reserves.

You should know

These pages show areas in the Auckland region where you cannot freedom camp, or where there are extra restrictions in place under the Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw.

This does not mean that freedom camping is allowed anywhere not listed.

If the area where you want to freedom camp is not on the list

If the area where you want to stay is not listed, this does not mean that freedom camping is allowed there.

Before you freedom camp, remember freedom camping is not allowed:

  • in tents in a public place anywhere in Auckland
  • on council reserves under the Reserves Act. Check for signage if you are unsure
  • at regional parks
  • anywhere else that doesn’t allow public parking or overnight stays, for example gated carparks and reserved parking. Check for signage if you are unsure.

In addition:

  • general rules for freedom camping apply in other areas
  • you still need to comply with normal traffic rules and parking restrictions in Auckland, as well as the rules outlined in the Freedom Camping in Vehicles Bylaw.
