Piha is a great spot for surfing, particularly at the northern and southern ends of the beach.

Tāwharanui is a popular location for surfers, especially if there is a swell on the east coast.
There are a couple of north facing beaches which make for good surfing in more southerly winds.

The Whatipū area is a scientific reserve owned by the Department of Conservation and managed on its behalf by Auckland Council Regional Parks.
It is a spectacular area of coastal dunes and wetlands.
