Description of the walk
You can explore the coastline from the northern end of Milford Beach to the southern end of Takapuna Beach, taking in the area's rock pools, beaches and scenery.
Start at
Milford Reserve. The route takes you along the shoreline in places, with uninterrupted views of the Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto Island, Auckland's most recent volcanic cone.
There are a number of good swimming beaches along the way, from secluded Thorne Bay to the pōhutukawa-lined Takapuna Beach. There is also plenty of opportunity along the way to see local marine life in the volcanic rock pools and fossils of ancient forests preserved by lava flows.
What to expect on this walk
Between Milford Beach and Takapuna Beach the route crosses private property. Some owners have permitted this.
A privately owned section of the Milford-Takapuna walkway is closed by the owners. There are no safe alternative coastal routes available.
Options for walkers include:
- returning back along the route already taken, or
- taking a detour via Audrey Road > Kitchener Road > Hurstmere Road > Minnehaha Avenue (or the reverse).
