Milford to Takapuna Walk

Description of the walk

You can explore the coastline from the northern end of Milford Beach to the southern end of Takapuna Beach, taking in the area's rock pools, beaches and scenery.

Start at Milford Reserve. The route takes you along the shoreline in places, with uninterrupted views of the Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto Island, Auckland's most recent volcanic cone.

There are a number of good swimming beaches along the way, from secluded Thorne Bay to the pōhutukawa-lined Takapuna Beach. There is also plenty of opportunity along the way to see local marine life in the volcanic rock pools and fossils of ancient forests preserved by lava flows.

What to expect on this walk

Between Milford Beach and Takapuna Beach the route crosses private property. Some owners have permitted this.

A privately owned section of the Milford-Takapuna walkway is closed by the owners. There are no safe alternative coastal routes available.

Options for walkers include:

  • returning back along the route already taken, or
  • taking a detour via Audrey Road > Kitchener Road > Hurstmere Road > Minnehaha Avenue (or the reverse).

Download a copy of the detour map

Please respect the environment and the privacy of local residents, and do not trespass on private property outside the route.

The Milford-Takapuna walk is best at low tide as the rocks are exposed and the path is dry. Check the tides on the MetService website.
