Barry Curtis Park playground renewal
About the park
Barry Curtis Park is a popular park among residents and visitors. It is located near Ormiston Town Centre and several schools.
The playground in Barry Curtis Park was identified as a high development priority in a recent review because it provides play opportunities for many age groups. We are now renewing the Barry Curtis Park playground to serve the growing community in the area.

Public feedback on concept design
We have developed the concept design after consultation with mana whenua, community and local residents.
We asked for feedback from the local community in April 2023 through:
- the Barry Curtis Playground Renewal consultation on the AK Have Your Say website
- libraries
- Howick Local Board Facebook page
- emails to relevant groups including:
- local schools
- community groups
- disability groups
- on-site observations.
After reviewing the public consultation feedback, Howick Local Board adopted the concept design for the playground renewal in September 2024.
Project goals
This project will:
- improve recreational opportunities for the growing community
- create more inclusive, accessible and safe play opportunities for young children and youth.
What the renewal will include
The renewal will include:
- installation of playground equipment, play surface and furniture
- improving pathways and boardwalks
- adding plants and landscaping to create natural fencing between the playground, car park and Stancombe Road.
During construction
During construction the playground and car park off Stancombe Road will be closed to the public.
We will follow all health and safety guidelines during the construction.
Project timeline
The playground renewal will start on 24 February 2025.
We expect to complete this project by mid-August 2025.
