Rodney's rates-funded rubbish collection

Rodney will get a new rates-funded rubbish service from Monday 1 September 2025.

Switching to a bin is better for the environment than using single-use plastic bags.

If you currently use a private rubbish collection service, contact them before 1 September 2025 to find out what to do with your existing rubbish bin.

Why this is happening

We are standardising waste services in Auckland so that every property receives the same:

  • level of service
  • types of bins
  • payment options.

We made this decision after consulting on the Annual Budget for 2022/2023.

To learn more, visit OurAuckland.

Rubbish bin charges

The rubbish bin charges:

  • are based on the size of your rubbish bin
  • will be added to your property rates from the new rating year starting 1 July 2025.

All residential property owners must pay this charge. They cannot remove this charge from their rates, even if they decide not to use the service.

The estimated charge for each bin size:

  • 80L bin - $134.63
  • 120L bin - $162.01
  • 240L bin - $268.90

The actual charge will be confirmed in the Annual Plan 2025/2026 when it is adopted in June 2025.

New rubbish bin delivery

We will deliver a standard 120L rubbish bin to your property from Monday 30 June 2025.

A standard 120L bin is suitable for most households and is equal to two 60L rubbish bags.

We will:

  • put your bin on your kerb
  • take a photo of the bin as proof of delivery.

Request a larger or smaller bin

The ratepayer of your property can request:

  • a larger 240L rubbish bin
  • a smaller 80L rubbish bin.

To get your preferred bin size before the rubbish service starts, make your request before 18 May 2025.

We will charge a $40 admin fee for requests made after 31 August 2025.

Use the 'Request a bin service' form:

  • Select 'Request bins for a new waste service'.
  • Select 'Rubbish Bin Small (80L)' or 'Rubbish Bin Large (240L)'.

Request a bin service

Only use this form if you want a smaller or larger rubbish bin. Tenants must ask the ratepayer of the property to complete this form.

Non-residential properties

If you are the ratepayer or landlord of a non-residential property, you can request a new rubbish bin. Learn How changes to our rubbish service will affect your area.
