Franklin's rates-funded rubbish collection

​Franklin will get a new rates-funded rubbish service from Monday 30 June 2025.

Switching to a bin is better for the environment than using a single-use plastic bag for every waste collection.

If you currently use a private rubbish collection service, contact them before 1 July 2025 to find out what to do with your existing rubbish bin.

Why this is happening

We are standardising waste services in Auckland so that every property receives the same:

  • level of service
  • types of bins
  • payment options.

We made this decision after consulting on the Annual Budget for 2022/2023.

New rubbish bin delivery

We will deliver a standard 120L rubbish bin to your property from Tuesday 3 June 2025.

A standard 120L bin is suitable for a household with up to three people.

Request a larger or smaller bin

From 3 March until 14 April 2025, the ratepayer of your property can request:

  • a larger 240L rubbish bin, suitable for a household with up to five people
  • a smaller 80L rubbish bin, suitable for a household with up to two people.

To do this, use the Request a bin service form, select 'Request bins for a new waste service' and select 'Rubbish Bin Small (80L)' or 'Rubbish Bin Large (240L)'.

Only use this form if you want a smaller or larger rubbish bin. Tenants must ask the ratepayer of the property to complete this form.

Start date for rates-funded rubbish collection

We will begin rates-funded rubbish collections from Monday 30 June 2025.

If you use official council rubbish bags, you can keep using them until Friday 27 June 2025.

Using excess rubbish bags

You can get a refund for unused orange council rubbish bags from 1 July to 31 August 2025 from the Pukekohe library and Waiuku Library.

Rural property rubbish collection

If you live in a rural property, you can choose to use council rubbish bags.

Email ruralrefusebags@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz with your property address or rates assessment number.

Once you have emailed us, we will send you approximately six months’ worth of bags. This will happen close to the time when our rates-funded collection service starts in your area.
